RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
