Nigeria's stunning new West African Art Museum (Mowaa) has ended up in the center of area political conflicts during the week it was expected to – but failed – to open its doors to the visitors for the very first time.

The Grand Vision

The large-scale campus stands in the heart of Benin's urban center, main city of the southern state of Edo – and features an excavation site and facilities designed by celebrated Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye, best known for the Washington African American Museum that was inaugurated in Washington DC in 2016.

It has been five years in the development – and is envisioned to showcase both the history and the modern times of creativity in the region known for the Benin Bronzes, artworks stolen from the city's royal palace by UK forces in the 1800s.

Setup and Prospects

It is notable – and ahead of the planned opening, Mowaa was energetic with staff committed to prove it is a venue that can rival well-known museums and galleries in the West.

Within preservation experts precisely unwrapped cultural items from secure wrapping, examining each artifact and taking thorough records before placing them on exhibition areas and bases.

Technicians adjusted temperature regulation systems. In the research lab, staff members calibrated equipment designed to conserve centuries-old items.

Investment and Economic Plans

The venture has been the concept of investor Phillip Ihenacho – now Mowaa's chief executive.

"I hope us to have a significant economic impact on communities in this region," he stated to journalists, mentioning that he aspired to make this urban center "a cultural destination."

Mowaa, a non-profit national foundation, envisions itself establishing more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing more than $80m each year to the local cultural industry through partnerships and events.

Investment and Administrative Problems

It has needed $25m to get here – money gathered from different donors, such as the international partners, the British Museum and the regional authorities.

But at present the local government has withdrawn support from beneath it – revoking the utilization of the site on which the facility was constructed.

An Edo state spokesperson explained this was because in the original paperwork it had referred to itself as EMOWAA – and it had subsequently removed "the regional name" from its designation.

Unrest and Official Response

This statement was preceded by rallies on recently, when people invaded the complex demanding it be designated the Royal Benin Museum.

A boisterous group confronted international visitors at the museum ahead of the opening – requiring them to be hurried away under official guard.

National leader Bola Tinubu has even intervened to work to address the dispute, establishing a special task force to do some damage control.

Political Complexities

But in what way has this become so politicised – and such a public relations crisis?

The majority of it comes down to internal conflicts at a local state level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki – whose administration concluded the previous year – who was a major backer of the initiative.

And it looks like the leadership of the current leader, a strong supporter of the regional monarch, called the royal figure, may desire more of a stake in the initiative. The demonstrators on Sunday, for instance, were calling for that the museum be put under the control of the royal leader.

The Cultural Artifacts Debate

This brings into focus the disputed topic of the Benin Bronzes, one of the region's most celebrated historical legacy.

Because though the museum does eventually open, these objects will be clearly not present.

They are brass, ivory and wooden artworks that once embellished the king's residence of the historical empire before colonial troops took them in the colonial era during a colonial invasion.

Today, thousands remain scattered across institutions in Western nations -- including the UK institution, German museum and the American museum.

Return Initiatives

Their homecoming has become one of the most disputed debates in the international art community. Approximately 150 have now been returned – and further are due to follow.

When proposals for the institution in the urban center were originally proposed in 2019, the movers and shakers on the national arts community anticipated it would become their perfect venue – a modern campus to display them to the international community.

But the issues became confused two years ago after the national authorities declared that the traditional ruler would be the proper guardian of any returned bronzes – and the palace pushed for a facility under the royal family's direct control, against the preferences of the former governor.
